Elk hunting/backpacking

I spent 2 nights last week elk hunting.  My friend Jason and I backpacked in to get away from all the atv's and road hunters.  We enjoyed 2 beautiful fall days hunting and backpacking.  The good weather however, made for poor hunting.
I had a great time and got to see some amazing stars at night without any moon.  My tent was at the top of a very steep canyon.
Hiking around I found a deer skull that a lion had eaten.  I also found several elk skulls that lucky hunters in previous years had harvested.

Isaac's first hunt

Isaac loves antelope steaks so I told him he needed to go hunting.  He got his hunter's safety 18 months ago.  I have been taking him to the gun range to practice and he drew an antelope tag this year.  He does not like the outdoors, but I promised him we would try one day only.  After missing  3 different antelope he finally connected on a close shot.  He said he actually enjoyed it.  Time will tell if he will try it again.

August 2014 Uintas

We spent 2 nights in the Uintas with Isaac, Savannah, and Sophia.  Joining us were Dan and his kids Luke and Eliza.  I bought a guide book from Amazon about hiking the Uintas and used this information to find the trailhead, big mistake.  The descriptions told the hiker to follow this river to a tributary and follow that up to the lake.  The lakes were only 2 miles in so I thought bush wacking would be okay.  There was no trail and the forest was thick with many deadfalls.  I scouted ahead at one point and took a nasty fall, see the photo of my leg.  Anyway, after 2 hours of hiking we find a dirt road with a truck on it?!!!  Turns out you can take a four wheel drive road to 1/2 mile from the lake and there were 2 trucks parked there.
The stupid book!!
The fishing was not very good, but we all had an enjoyable trip and things went well from that point on.  We hiked out on the dirt road which was longer, but easy going.  Once to the main road, I jogged back to my truck.

Wyoming's Green River

Last month I did a fly fishing trip in western Wyoming with my friend Dan.  We camped right next to the river and had a great time floating the river and catching nice fish.  We floated the river trying different sections each day.
We got to see the town of Big Piney, which Dan was excited about.

The girls backpack trip

The girls will turn 9 years old on Monday.  For their birthday, they wanted to go backpacking.  I doubt this trend will continue 5 years from now, or 10 years from now, but I shall enjoy it while it lasts.
We hiked the south fork of crow creek, medicine bow national forest.  It rained off and on all night, but stopped in the morning so we went for a hike  and got to see some elk.
Daisy had a good time and made a mess of herself.  She likes to climb the rocks everywhere.

Green River

I spent several days floating the Green River with my high school friends, Dan and Randy.  It was beautiful weather and good fishing.  I wish I lived closer to that river because it provides many great memories.  I experimented with my waterproof case for my iPhone and took some underwater pictures of fish that we caught.

Spring Steelhead

I had a great week in Alaska seeing family and fishing for steelhead.  They are a very smart fish and quite the challenge.  They are known as the fish of a thousand casts, and it sure did seem like that at times.
CJ was able to fish with me for 2 days and he made the most of it by catching his first steelhead.
I also got to try octopus.  Cherie, Trace, and Andy were very nice to me.  They fed me wonderful food each day, including halibut enchiladas.    It was a great week to be in Alaska.

Spring Fishing has started

In Cheyenne we have had a cold and snowy last 2 months, however I was able to sneak a quick fishing trip to the Green River last weekend.  Dan joined me and we floated a couple of days.  The weather was pretty windy, but we made it work.
It was great for the cabin fever I've had lately.

Organic Meat

In October I was able to get a small elk.  The meat has been very tasty as well as healthy.  I was by myself and had to pack him out in quarters.  It took all day because I got him almost 2 miles off the road.
